CALMIs an exhibition 'module' promoting a larger exhibition at the Royal College of Art (from May 1-21, 1998). This wonder is called 'the Campaign Against Living Miserably' and is about artists creating their own personal utopias. The design mixes naively large flat areas of colour with newspaper like halftone images to suggest campaigning and protest. The idea was to create a self-contained site to promote the exhibition which could also be read as an obsessive manifesto (and hopefully artwork) in itself. The artists are presented as a list of campaigners. Type is liberally sliced up - as in a utopia you can do whatever you want. Primary fonts - Keedy Bold, VAG rounded, Helvetica Black.... More

CCACA nice, slightly eclectic and quirky site for the California College of Arts and Crafts, CCAC for San Francisco and Oakland. The Post Tool founders who designed this playful site attended and met at CCAC. They've created an accessible site for their former school that is fanciful, airy and beautiful.... More

crashsite (via waybackmachine)Boredom and Apocalypse, home of hopeless sexuals. Besides some lengthy downloads, crashsite houses clean and original design work. The design sometimes overshadows the content which is bizarre, humourous and often twisted. No longer online since this posting. Designed by the Santa Monica Design Team - part of the BigGun Project. As far as we know, Crashsite disbanded long ago, as did the BigGun Project. Members moved on. Cities change. You may find a few of the ol' crew hanging at companies spread across the West Coast (see links).... More

Design Museum

Design MuseumThe ultra-clean site of the Designmuseum in London, England is available in either Flash or Regular HTML. Designmuseum Flash features a great teaser gallery of pieces in their collection and on show through their Gallery3(cubed). Some of the best parts of the site, aside from the great industrial designs showcased within, are the miniture loading animations between pages. The design style is also effectively translated into the navigational elements to create a cohesive content delivery vehicle.... More

disappearing inc.

disappearing inc.A font foundry that combines industrial print designs and web techniques into a platform that artfully displays their fonts. This site uses art instead of words to define what web design is all about. The site, although little changed since 1997, is still an excellent showcase of graphically rich print design merged with technical functionality. Some may find a few of the interface items a bit difficult to manipulate, but for the most part the site is equally rich in content and delivery, which is why the site may not be suitable for all browsers - their fonts are not suitable for all designers! Overall great stuff. This site gained the following awards: Publish Magazine's Best of the Web 1997 "*****" (5 Stars) Net Guide Magazine.... More

dotCom Gallery

dotCom GalleryA smooth reflection on interface design for this art gallery. This site shows an excellent sense of refinement that only the original designer(s) can testify to. As the site gets updated (irregularly), brilliant hopefuls like yourself can submit their cyber art & creations and get showcased in cyberspace. No longer online since this posting. Altough it was rarely updated and is now defunct, the gallery represented one of the earlier designs on the web that effectively used frames to enhance navigation rather than confound it. No longer online since this posting. see also: eyestorm, panoplie, potatoland... More

double aught

double aughtFrom the designers of Marathon & Marathon Infinity, this website reflects the futuristic feel of the game's interface and provides a glimpse into the creators' minds. This site was fun for exploring, often featuring new and inspirational homepage designs on a regular basis. The designers also worked on the Marathon games series, popular in the mid-90's, and many of the cool screen designs were based upon Mararthon-style modularity and innovation. This site is no longer online at this posting.... More

Dynamic Tower

Dynamic TowerTalk about your pie in the sky! Architecture firm David Fisher's Dynamic Group has released plans to build the world's first rotating skyscraper (Where else, but in Dubai of course, the home of over-the-top taste). Each floor will have the ability to rotate independently (slowly, we hope), creating an ever-shifting visual line and myriad shapes. While the skyscraper breaks all previous molds, the web site for the architecture firm (link) falls way behind the times with several broken images, lackluster layouts, misspelled page titles, and poor transitional effects. At a minimum cost of $4M per apartment, you'd think they could do just a little better job designing a dynamic web site! Hmmm... I think we smell a sales opportunity!... More

e13The home of junk design. As textural simulation effects becomes more popular, the opposite spectrum of graphic design leans towards the digital bit-mapped and pixelated effects. e13 is anti-design that makes us reflect upon current trends while questioning our ability to make sense of most of the garbage that makes up what we see online. Check out our web gallery special on Art to read more about e13 and see where current design trends have NOT taken us. see also: Day Dream, Jodi... More

Entreprises & Construction Durable

Entreprises & Construction DurableThis captivating design for a green website on sustainable construction is crafted with movement and unique transitions to diametrically oppose grey, static architecture websites. We absolutely love the way each page zooms out to show the entire page layout, then transitions you smoothly back to reading distance. Written entirely in French, even if you can't understand everything, you'll appreciate the flowing beauty of the Flash transitions and the intuitive user interface design. Fantastic design!... More

entropy8zuperA beautiful range of design graces these pages. Each full page, once loaded, completely fills the space like an artists' canvas. Great animations combine with content and backgrounds to give this site a richness usually reserved for print or painting work. Not enough can be said for the work of Auria Harvey. Her work has graced Digitalthread three times to date. This was her personal & professional site, which featured many original ideas and designs that were often heralded by design mags and emerging web design review sites. This site has since merged with Zuper.org. See links below.... More
