A Scanner Darkly

A Scanner DarklyBased on legendary science-fiction author Philip K. Dick's own experiences, "A Scanner Darkly" tells the darkly comic, but deeply tragic tale of drug use in the modern world. The film plays like a graphic novel come to life with live-action photography overlaid with an advanced animation process-a method known as interpolated rotoscoping, first empolyed in Richard Linklaters 2001 film "Waking Life" - to create a haunting vision of America seven years from now. The site design, which is extremely digitized and pixelated, places the user behind the scanning console themselves, scanning the film and actors, but in turn also being tracked as you view the site. A very cool looking production.... More

BAM

BAMThe Brooklyn Academy of Music is a performance venue for dramatic stage shows in Brooklyn, NYC. BAM offers a very hip and modern feeling site which elegantly showcases their shows and offerings. BAM is also the home of BAM Rose Cinemas - Brooklyn's only movie house dedicated to first-run independent and foreign film and repertory programming. The use of tonal greys and horizontal banding when mixed with big, clean san-serif type and sparesly colored imagery makes for finely branded and modern feel, appealing to a newer and younger audience range of theater-goers.... ByeByeBlackBird

ByeByeBlackBirdByeByeBlackBird is a minimal movie promo site that for a movie directed by Robinson Savary, with James Thierree, Derek Jacobi, Michael Lonsdale, Jodhi May and Isabella Miko. The website presents all the characters, music and clips, and promotes the film with a very simple navigation (using Flash) based on the movie billboard poster. Nice interpretation of the poster and successful job turning it into a website. Unique.... More

Center of the World

Center of the World'Center' is the full frontal interactive trailer for the new movie by Arista, released April 20th. This Flash-built experience brings you into the nightclub where a simulated quicktime interface allows you to touch and select girls to dance for you, seduce you, and much more. The interactive elements are done so well by the crafty design team that at some points you may even wonder if it's happening for real. We also loved the hazy reds and purples - reminds us of our corner XXX joint.... More

Coraline

CoralineBased on a novella by Neil Gaiman, (Sandman comic books) and directed by Henry Selick (Nightmare Before Christmas) this new stop-motion film promises to be an inspiring tale and visual treat. This creation took about 10 years to evolve from a bedtime story to a complete movie, but it's a good thing it did – it is the first movie to be shot in stereoscopic 3-D, making it ideal for a modern 3-D viewing experience. But before you go, be sure to see the eclectic web site and create a button-eyed version of yourself.... More

Grindhouse

GrindhouseQuentin Tarantino is at it again with his present day homage to the gritty and plot-challenged exploitation horror and action films of the 70's. In this double-feature film (releasing April 6th) we are re-introduced to a genre of film where sex, violence and gore trumped any sense of artistic merit (way before Leprechaun 3 came out). "Grindhouse" exploitation films run the gambit from the Russ Meyers classics to various zombie and kung-fu matinees. So in that vein, this movie site uses an over-the-top visual language of dirt, grit and gore, and ties it all – loosely – together with a cut-out, collage construction reminicent of the pulp mags of the day. If you have a thirst for movies with pointless sex, violence and gore (no, not Species II), then look no further than your local Grindhouse.... More

Hanso Foundation

Hanso FoundationFor those who are not familiar with the TV show, this site is the launching point for a massive interactive game based on the hit ABC series Lost. Hinted to in a commmercial during the show (Tivo users may have missed this), a live TV ad points you to the fictional Hanso corporation site which actually is the beginning of a cryptic crossover game that intertwines with the mysterious happenings on the TV show. Done in a sort of 'Donnie Darko' way [a classic design for scary films], the site seems harmless enough until you start to dig deeper, and reveal some disturbing elements that would not appear in a regular corporate site. Interestingly this game, being called 'The Lost Experience', will continue on for several weeks, with different clues being given in each country the show is aired... sometimes online, sometimes by phone, or through the show itself. So,... More

Home Corp

Home CorpThis is a showcase and portfolio site for Home Corp, a video production company based in the UK and USA. If you've come to this address, you've come to do one thing - to view the commercial reels of the Directors who use this site as a virtual video portfolio. This new website has been designed and developed by Pink Pigeon (a DVD design company that also develops Flash web designs). But getting back to the site... It's very bold, and simple, using large chunky type that is very clickable. Some very subtle nuances that we love: especially click the "fade-to-black" option while viewing a reel. Very well thought out in all aspects.... More

Hungryman

Hungryman Commercial Production CompanyHungryman developed this new site to show off the company's personality, and exhibit the sense of humor of their directors. Using unique textures and vintage photos borrowed from eclectic rock station WACKY79 (Louisville, Kentucky), every page merges the kitsch mystique of these 1950’s - 1970's grainy photos with the award winning work of the Hungryman Directors Roster. In addition to the simplicity of the design, the pages are contrasted with fluid and snappy motion that create a subtle visual tension. Overall, this website feels nostalgic, lovable, and may even bring a wry smirk to your face.... More

jump tomorrow

jump tomorrow (archive link)The site is accurately self-described as a "flash journey", and you'll understand once you cruise around this bizarre scrolling landscape. We don't know how much of this illustrated depiction is supposed to relate to the film, but we have a feeling it will only make sense once the film is viewed. The best aspects of the site are the unfolding illustrations (ala early Once-Upon-A-Forest modules) and the original video game style navigation. The entire experience comes off like a twisted 60's version of the Sims.... More

KM Broadband

KM Broadband2 very ambitious broadband sites. Movieline is focused on presenting up-to-date movie trailers for indie films. Gravitygames presents an ambitious lineup of broadband content for all 'X' style games - from skateboarding to wakeboarding. Nice graphics and generally interesting, but somewhat lacking in fresh content. Both are interesting places for getting the low-down and insights into film and sports artists. See trailers from the latest releases or competitions and learn a bit about the artists and athletes in the Flash and Quicktime driven broadband magazine formats. These are the first of several ambitious broadband platforms that kick media is developing. They are all linked locally from Kick Media BroadBand.... More

Pickled, the Movie

Pickled, the Movie (site down)A beautiful site for a new surf movie presented by Jamie Mosberg and Billabong. Inside, get familiar with the rough-edged and tweaked duotone design style. Planet Earth

Discovery Channel | Planet EarthDon't forget to catch this show this Sunday. Planet Earth, a five years in the making mini-series event will be an epic visual feast for the mind and eyes. In this day and age where we may easily forget that we even share this planet with other animals, this show will hopefully be a consciousness-expanding event. While the site itself has some poor points, is overly bulky (need at least 1GZ and broadband) and is rather disjointed, it really will come down to the show broadcasting on March 25th. This site gives you a tiny taste of this marvelous new nature show... and sadly, perhaps one of nature's last hurrahs.... More

PopcornPopcorn is a Swedish organization promoting wider availability of quality independent films. Each year over the course of several days and several venues the Popcorn festival runs selected original works in film. The site itself is tight and impeccably clean, featuring a really nice JavaScript navigational implementation that provides a randomized visual treat as you explore the links. It was difficult to actually view a film but the information about the entrants is detailed and desriptive, and provided in both English and Swedish. Popcorn sets the stage for widening acceptance of the independent film scene in Sweden.... More

The Diving Bell and the Butterfly

The Diving Bell and the ButterflyA very simple and beautiful site with few gimmicks or "flashiness" for this anticipated third film from Julian Schnabel (Basquiat, Before Night Falls). It just maintains an overall cohesion of colors and treatments — type included — that gel nicely together. We also really liked the blurry, "bleed-to-white" spot-transitions between sections. The Police Inside Out

The Police Inside OutFollowing on the heels of the recently announced Police tour – and just screening in Japan this week – The Police Inside Out is the film by Stewart Copeland, drummer for The Police, who compiled his Super 8 footage to create an intimate look at what it was like to be in the band back in the 80's. This site promo for the film has all the elements that we love these days: a large poster style front page, wood textures and treatment, a collage of graphics and finally, big type juxtaposed with small, Japanese lettering... in fact, we can't choose which aspects we like most—they hit us on all our soft points! Well, although the site can be quite slow (served from Japan) and many of the links are external and you won't understand a word... it's still a rockin' site for this rock bands first official movie.... TongsvilleA miniature, but deeply detailed world is now complete in this slightly bizarre site for a video production company, Hammer & Tongs. In Tongsville visitors explore a number of unique city attractions & metaphors - try the bank on the boardwalk or visit the theater - where each is a refined interactive destination. Tongsville uses a menage of pixel styles that are best compared to famed digitally designed experiences like Netbabyworld and eBoy's eCity.
