London 2012 Olympics Brand

London 2012 Olympics BrandThe bright and colorful (and hotly debated) new logo for the London 2012 Olympics brand designed by Wolf Ollins makes a bold statement with its release last week. While some stalwart UK news critics are up in arms (notably the Sun and Independent) and designers are being polarized from coast to coast, some of the brand messaging is lost in the public's initial gut reaction to the logo. It's actually quite a positive message of inclusion, fair play, and interaction — even welcoming people to download the logo template and design their own variations (hint, hint, 'threadsters.) Personally, we're for anything that stirs up this much debate and interest in graphic design... and additionally any logo that has been described as both "new rave", a "toilet monkey" and looks like a graffiti mural gets our vote! Finally, since no one can quite decide what the logo is, or whether it will... More

Vitamin Water

Vitamin WaterA fun, funky and fabulous color rush greets you in the technicolor product site for Vitamin Water. This nutrient-infused drink has taken the bottled beverage market by storm (recently purchased by Coke for $4.1B) due in no small part to its bright color-coded labeling and effervescent copy-writing. The site takes the branding to the next level by bundling each flavor with its own expressive animated illustration – that harmonizes quite well with the current "Coke side of life" branding which also uses bright, abstract illustrations (and no, we don't believe in coincidence). Be sure to note the undulating, color coded navigation and the celebrity tie-ins that lend even more personality to each flavor. A brilliant example of successful brand marketing.... More

Tijuana Flats

Tijuana FlatsA unique Mexican food chain in the making, Tijuana Flats approaches food, wall art and hot sauces with an "anything goes" approach – but also heralds a strong community-based value system. The result is a fun feeling food joint with twist of lime and a spicy appeal. We really liked the down-home Flash site that employs several different types of hand-drawn fonts (and perhaps one of the few times we'll conceed that more than 5 different font styles work well together). Nice typography and non-technical appeal... and be sure to check out some of their irreverant advertising campaigns.... More

Touting everything from branded coconuts, bongs, to spray-painted goats and fishing boat billboards (locations cannot be confirmed)—the results of this hilarious campaign exceeded sales target by over 250% – with 40% more hits than targeted on launch day and an average of over 1400 hits per month (from a maximum pool of only 750 media planners). Doritos | Snack Strong

Doritos | Snack StrongWith a bit of nacho-on-tongue-in-cheek showmanship, Doritos beings us into their immersive virtual 3D hollywood production set, which doubles as a slighty apocalyptic-hued fantasy secret lab. Again, the detail in these animations is certainly beyond the scope of reasonable spending, but the results are really impressive. There is more than enough eye-candy to go around—down to the randomness programmed into little ant-like people on the ground... and it's only 2/5 complete as three more sections are due to be released in the near future. Rexona | Action City

Rexona | Action CityAlthough we've all seen 3D immersive sites before, some of the newest breed take it to an uncommonly high level of detail. Take for example the Rexona (also know as Degree deodorant in the U.S.) "Action City" site, which takes its cue from a very popular stunt man TV commercial produced in 2006. It has 3D graphics rivaling next-generation video games, but due to the medium, contains only 1% of the actual full-environmental funtionality—which truthfully, given the medium, is quite an accomplishment. Playb3yond

Playb3yondIt's not often when the future of a major music and entertainment company like Sony rests on the release of a single product. So when you debut two new technologies in one gaming system and sell it for a $400 loss in hopes of making billions down the road... Yup! Sounds like the perfect reason to blow even more money on an extravagant, animated web advertisement - complete with Captain Kirk voice overs! Sadly, at the end of 15 minutes, the site is ultimately an expensive, 3-D marketing brochure with lots of glitz and no interactive substance (somehow, Shatner specialties). However, it also makes us salivate for the very latest in high-definition gaming and graphics. Baltika7

We certainly have mixed emotions about this beer promotion site... For a non-Slavic brewery to brashly market a beer to kids using under the guise of "New-Russian-Style" is an insulting swipe at underpriveleged Russian youth living in difficult times... All in one site, they manage to callously poke fun of the subjects of squalor, poverty, homelessless and punk culture, and then try to hide it all under the dangerous branding-theme of "cool" irreverence. It's an unfortunate marketing scheme, appealing to no one except perhaps the least compassionate alchoholic looking for a cheap beer, and the butt of the joke enforcing the stereotype of poor, alchohlic, Russian youth. The one saving grace of this site is the complicated Cockroach Race which has some novel gaming features. But besides that, the photos, branding and marketing slant of this site are questionable to us, and perhaps a result of marketing gone awry. Maybe... More

This is a well branded, brightly colored and amusing site that remains clean and clutter free, but sprinkled with demonstrative gif builds. An overall appealling product design and impressive online delivery of it's capabilities and range of models.... More

Hans-Brinker Hotel

Hans-Brinker HotelShockingly irreverant, this tribute to the wonders of clip art is a purposefully crude advertisement for Amsterdam's premier budget hotel. In Amsterdam, they do it in style - even when it is completely lacking it. Check in or check out of this one-of-a-kind budget site.... More

fuse98

Fuse98:beyond typographyBased on an invisible underlying grid structure, this single-page wonder for Fuse's 1998 conference in San Francisco effectively delivers all the necessary information at a single click. Well considered and effectively constructed, this DHTML powered wonder hypes the upcoming conference with understated sublety. It says "we know what this is all about", and draws you in to discover more - all with an absolute barest minimum of graphical elements. This was the hot design conference of 1998 - in conjuction with Neville Brody and Fontshop International. Lead Designer: Olivier Chetelat Designer: Shawn Hazen Programmer: Joseph Ternes... More

forest for the trees

forest for the treesAn impressive interactive design concept supported by excellent functionality: this is one of the first 4.0 generation sites that really delivers - concept, visuals, sound, interactivity + variety. The website design plays on the phrase "you can't see the forest for the trees." Individual artists were each commissioned to do an interactive interpretation of a particular track for the Dreamworks album without knowing what the other participants were doing, or how it would all come together. The result is a forest of trees testifying to the inspiration of the visionary soundscapes in Forest for the Trees.... More

details! survival kit

details! survival kitAppreciate the pure placidity of uncluttered pages enhanced by the worry-free navigational guide: The Fabulous Navigator Page. This site was redesigned since this posting. The delicate line-work and subtle color ranges help create an appeasing atmosphere for this retailer of ergonomic add-ons. This clean and simple design served well as a calling card, but has since been redesigned for commercial purposes.... More

isea97

isea97The Inter-society for the Electronic Arts employs a riveting metallic print design for their 8th Annual Symposium on Electronic Art. The conference is one of the most significant events in the global electronic arts calendar, and this site lends a wealth of credibility to that claim. The event has come to represent a key international forum for debate, discussion, exchange, critique and celebration of electronic art. Staged in a different world city each year, its presentation in Liverpool and Manchester this coming 1998 represents the first time that Britain has hosted this prestigious cultural event. This partcular design is no longer online since this posting.... More

Sm:)e comm

Sm:)e commSimplicity evokes a wealth of ideas, as displayed by this single page minimalist intro to a web design firm. The inside is also subdued, but we just loved this front page. Smile Comm's entry page utilizes principles of Swiss grid graphic design without losing it's objective strength and interest. It also loads fast, which puts a double-smile on our face. The site has changed since this posting.... More

Screams across the web

Screams across the webThis emotive wonder was created last year for Lycos's Halloween Hot Picks. It's a conceptual wonder - fine textures and subtle movements evoke fear among surfers of the web! A spooky conceptual demo created last Holloween (1996) by Entropy8 for Lycos. The design treatment combines script type and some early English type to create an antique, gothic feel.... More

MTV

MtvThe web face for MTV in 1997. Great design combined with JavaScript activity made the site feel like a rich media CD-rom. There even was a 'caffinated' version if you could handle the wait - which at that time helped bring down the site for good. As visually rich as the TV interstitials, you could find a wealth of original designs and gimmicks all across the entire site. This site still needs changes. Originally the design was so graphically heavy that MTV was forced to create a lighter redesign as early as late 1997. Since then the design has been hovering in a political identity purgatory. With so many various interests and off-shoots, it's no wonder the MTV site is such a hard beast to tame. We still look forward to any new developments and hope to see a great redesign resolution occur, but we're not holding our breath. See... More
